Farmer fined after worker falls from roof

A farmer and his daughter could face a workplace accident compensation claim after they pleaded guilty to breaching health and safety regulations. James and Elizabeth Reay, who own Hall Farm, near Bishop's Stortford, were fined £4,000 each after a worker fell through a barn roof. Stefan Wasilewski, 39, was cleaning the roof of the barn when the asbestos cement roof broke. He fell five metres to the concrete floor below and suffered multiple fractures to his pelvis and ribs. According to the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), over 4,000 people suffered major injuries last year as a result of falls from height. Commenting after the hearing at Harlow Magistrates' Court, HSE inpector Kim Wicks said: "This incident could easily have been avoided if these had been followed. "Falls from height are among the biggest causes of workplace deaths in the UK and the outcome of this incident could have been even more serious." It comes after Buckinghamshire-based Morgans Plant Hire Ltd was fined £50,000 after a worker was killed when a forklift truck he was operating overturned. Posted by Georgina Price
