Personal injury claim gang jailed

Three members of a 'crash for cash' personal injury claim gang have been jailed at Luton Crown Court. The gang conned unsuspecting motorists by engineering crashes and lodging fraudulent injury insurance claims. Kamsan Mahmood, Peter Charlery and Istafa Hussain, all of Bedfordshire, were sentenced to prison terms ranging from 18 months to five years. The trio involved over 30 friends in the scam by helping them to file claims. Judge Michael Kay QC is reported by the Daily Mail as saying the operation required substantial planning and organisation. "Personal injury claims were presented on an almost industrial scale. Doctors were presented at 15-minute intervals with persons who had whiplash injury. You are greedy and dishonest," he said. The case comes at a time when it thought that the rising cost of car insurance is partly due to legal claims. Lord Jackson's review of civil litigation and dispute resolution identified a ten per cent premium paid by motorists as a result of personal injury claims. Posted by Alex McLean
