RoSPA: Firms need health and safety strategy

Businesses seeking to avoid a workplace accident compensation claim have been advised to put in place health and safety training strategies for staff.
The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) has called on all firms to take a more proactive approach to ensuring all workers are fully informed of how to improve safety.
Roger Bibbings, occupational safety adviser at the charity, said: "Employees must be trained in health and safety in their workplace on induction and then again when they face new hazards, when they take on management responsibilities, or when they need to learn new skills."
His comments come after new figures revealed that slips and trips could be one of the biggest causes for manufacturing workers to lodge a personal injury claim.
These types of accidents accounted for over a fifth of all injuries in the sector last year, insurance firm Aviva revealed as it launched its Simply Safety campaign.
Statistics also show that in 2009/10, 2.4 million working days were lost in the manufacturing industry as a result of workplace injury and work-related ill health.
