Wills and inheritance tax planning being neglected

Wills and inheritance tax planning is being ignored by more than half of the UK population, new research reveals.
According to Standard Life, 51 per cent of British adults do not have a will, with this figure rising to 60 per cent for those aged between 35 and 44 years of age.
Most concerning is that 22 per cent people aged over 65 have not taken measures to ensure their estate is in order.
Julie Hutchison, head of estate planning at Standard Life, noted that the cost of not having a will is often much higher than the fees for drafting one.
"People spend their lives trying to provide the best they can for loved ones, but they're falling at the final hurdle by not protecting their futures when they're no longer here," she added.
The study also revealed that 30 per cent of those who do have a will have not reviewed in the last three to ten years.
Ms Hutchinson explained that changes to inheritance tax and changing family dynamics can leave old wills out of date.
The report follows another from the savings and investment group that suggested recent changes to inheritance tax rules could see more people leave money to charities.
