CLC Contractors fined for exposing workers to asbestos

A number of employees working for Southampton-based CLC Contractors Ltd could be at risk of asbestosis or other industrial diseases, after exposure to asbestos.
The workers were operating at a major renovation site in Plymouth, having started work in a building that had not been cleared of asbestos in May 2009.
CLC has been successfully prosecuted in a case brought by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) at Plymouth Magistrates Court (April 18th).
The company was fined a total of £10,000 and ordered to pay £3,064 in costs, having pleaded guilty to exposing four employees to asbestos.
HSE inspector Barry Trudgian explained: "This incident could have been avoided if an adequate risk assessment had been made before the work started and communicated clearly to the workforce.
"Exposure to asbestos can have serious long-term consequences for your health and precautions must be taken to minimise any risks when working on buildings."
Earlier this month, property developer Michael Murton, of Bewdley near Kidderminster, was prosecuted for failing to identify an asbestos risk prior to instructing contractors to start work on a Wrexham nightclub.
