Hundreds of schools may be at risk of asbestos compensation claims

Hundreds of schools could be open to asbestos compensation claims following findings that uncovered worrying failures in asbestos management.
Of more than 600 schools across England surveyed by safety representatives commissioned by nine unions, less than a third (28 per cent) noted that asbestos was clearly marked.
Worryingly, nearly 40 per cent indicated that it definitely was not marked, while only a fifth of respondents said school staff had been given asbestos awareness training.
Moreover, around 70 per cent of safety representatives were not consulted about asbestos management.
National Union of Teachers (NUT) general secretary Christine Blower explained: "Lack of consultation with safety reps and lack of training for staff are two major areas of concern.
"We are ready to work with schools and local authorities in any way we can to improve standards of asbestos management in schools."
Chairman of the Joint Union Asbestos Campaign, Julie Winn, added that the survey supports the case for improved asbestos management in all UK schools.
