Nestle Purina fined for accident at work involving five employees

Nestle Purina may face workplace accident compensation claims following an incident at a factory in Wisbech, during which five workers suffered severe burns. The petcare giant has been prosecuted and served with a fine, after a food processing machine steam pressure system malfunctioned, exposing the men to a burst of steam and boiling water. One man even required cosmetic surgery and the Croydon-based company admitted breaching the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 and Pressure Systems Safety Regulations 2000. An investigation by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) following the incident revealed that there had been no proper assessment of risk following modifications to a hydrostat control system. HSE inspector Peter Burns explained: "There are strict rules and regulations around the modifications and repairs of high pressure systems that are in place to protect workers operating or maintaining these machines." Earlier this month, a worker suffered serious burns at an Enviro-Strip factory in Wilnecote, after opening an oven door and exposing himself to a flash fire. Posted by Paul Stevens
