Transport ministers target safer roads with lighting investment

Head and spinal injury claims resulting from accidents along poorly lit roads could be curbed as a result of investment in local street lighting. The London boroughs of Croydon and Lewisham and councils in Cambridgeshire, Oldham, Rochdale and Knowsley will receive a total of £432.8 million to spend on street lighting improvements. Local and regional transport minister Norman Baker has earmarked the funding for the installation of tens of thousands of new lighting columns over a five-year period. In addition, money will be invested in new illuminated traffic signs and bollards, with technology selected to reduce energy consumption and detect defective lighting early. Reducing road accidents and the risk of personal injury claims is just one reason for the heavy investment, which will also target crime reduction. Mr Baker explained: "Good street lighting is vitally important to in reducing road accidents, crime and the fear of crime. "We will continue to invest in transport infrastructure that improves safety and provides reassurance to local communities." Posted by Georgina Price
