Tyneside police officer seeks compensation after squad car flipped

A South Tyneside police officer is making a workplace accident compensation claim against his employer Northumbria Police following an accident in one of the force's squad cars.
PC Christopher Pearson claims that the vehicle was defective, causing him to lose control and crash it into a kerb after which it flipped over six times.
According to the Shields Gazette, the 38-year-old told Newcastle County Court that the vehicle had veered off course coming out of a bend.
He explained: "I could not understand why the vehicle was going in that direction.
"In situations like that there is a lot of things going through your mind, you are wondering what the hell is going on."
Road safety charities and organisations are growing increasingly concerned about the risk of road accidents, as austerity measures force companies and road enforcement groups to make cut backs.
Last week, the Department for Transport set out plans to review the MOT regime, which could require tests to be carried out every two years instead of three.
This may help to prevent accidents caused by vehicles that are on the road with some undiscovered technical fault.
