Stonehaven-based Viners Grain fined following worker injury

A workplace accident compensation claim may be under consideration after a worker at Stonehaven animal grain company Viners Grain LLP was injured in a fall.

Douglas Mortimer was preparing animal feed and climbed into an excavator bucket to empty a tote bag, when he lost his balance and fell onto the concrete floor.

Following the incident on December 9th 2009, which resulted in quite significant head injuries, the company was fined £4,000 for breaching the Health and Safety at Work etc 1974 Act.

A Health and Safety Executive (HSE) investigation concluded that there was no safe system of work in place and employees were working at height unnecessarily.

HSE inspector Colin Leaver explained: "There is no excuse for the company not to have carried out a straightforward risk assessment, nor to have agreed procedures for how this work was to be carried out safely."

In March, Milton Keynes plastics manufacturer Alpla Ltd was fined after worker Barry Brice fell onto a tool room floor while measuring a skylight.
