Title theft risk underlines need for residential property conveyancing

Regular residential property conveyancing must be considered by homeowners, who are at risk of property title theft.
Dedicated property title theft protection firm Gatekeeper Asset Protection has warned homeowners to heed the advice of organisations such as the Land Registry and Law Society.
Following a BBC One Show feature highlighting the issue which aired last week, the firm has underlined the danger faced, but also the relatively simple and cheap steps that can be taken to protect against becoming a victim of this type of fraud.
Gatekeeper chairman Brian Harris explained: "Soft targets include mortgage-free properties, holiday homes and buy-to-let investments, the title to which owners seldom monitor daily.
"There are public warnings on government websites, but I shouldn't imagine many truly understand the risks they face."
Often, the rightful owner of a property can be oblivious to the fraud, until it comes to a point when they are required to demonstrate their legal ownership, such as when trying to sell a property or handling the estate following a death.
