Steel company fined £40k for crush injury

A steel firm could be facing a workplace accident compensation claim after it pleaded guilty to three breaches of safety regulations.
Gateshead-based Spartan UK was fined £40,000 after a worker's feet were crushed in a rolling mill.
Alan Dixon, 62, also from Gateshead, had his right leg amputated below the knee and is still undergoing treatment to repair his left heel following the incident in 2009.
He was carrying out routine maintenance work when he was crushed by a hydraulic side arm used to position steel plates through mill rollers.
Mr Dixon said: "My injuries affect me from first thing in the morning. I can't just jump up and go to the bathroom to shower - I have to put my prosthetic leg on first. Just getting dressed is a different ball game."
Jonathan Wills from the Health and Safety Executive, which brought the case, said "simple and inexpensive" safety measures would have prevented the accident.
It comes after Robertson Construction Central Ltd of Elgin, Moray, and Stirling Stone Ltd were each fined £200,000 for their parts in the death of a stonemason on a construction site in Glasgow.
