Firm fined after worker breaks back

A Halifax firm has been fined £13,500 after a worker suffered a broken back when he fell seven metres from the roof of a house.
Fluetech Ltd, which could now face a workplace accident compensation claim, pleaded guilty to three counts of breaching health and safety regulations at Leeds Magistrates' Court following the incident in February 2010.
The 33-year-old worker, who does not want to be identified, spent 15 days in hospital and suffered serious back injuries.
He was about to install a flue liner in a chimney when the roofing ladder he was using gave way.
An investigation carried out by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) revealed the company failed to assess the risks properly before the work started and did not make sure workers were provided with the correct equipment for the job.
HSE inspector David Welsh commented: "The company was very poor at assessing and managing the risks of working at heights. Anyone who works in the construction industry knows that falls are the commonest cause of death and serious injury in the workplace."
It follows a national crackdown on unsafe working at height practices carried out by the organisation, which says more than 4,000 workers suffered major injuries as the result of falls from height and 12 lost their lives.
