Inheritance tax plans 'don't go far enough for charities'

Reforms to wills and inheritance tax planning contained in last month's Budget do not go far enough for charities, it has been claimed.
Chancellor George Osborne unveiled plans to grant an inheritance tax break to anyone who leaves ten per cent of their estate to charity in their will.
Standard Life said last week that the measures are likely to see more people donate money to non-profit organisations.
However, the Society of Will Writers has claimed the changes do not go far enough and will not make a large difference to the third sector.
The organisation's director-general Brian McMillan said: "It is a move in the right direction, which is trying to get the charities to do more, rather than help from the government. I just don't think it is going to do a lot, really."
He also noted that people can "significantly mitigate" their inheritance tax by leaving money to charities.
