Grandparents to get greater access rights

A review of family law, mediation and relationships is proposing greater access rights for grandparents of children caught up in divorce cases.
The reforms to the family justice system have been set out in a review that promises to make the welfare of children "paramount".
Drawn up by former civil servant David Norgrove, the plans include new Parenting Agreements designed to bring together arrangements for children's care after separation.
Although it does not recommend a legal right of access for grandparents, the review highlights "the importance of a relationship with grandparents and other relatives and friends who the child values".
In addition, it calls for mediation services to be imposed on separating couples, reinforcing what the government has been suggesting for the last few months.
Justice minister Jonathan Djanogly has been keen to promote the use of mediation services in family cases to reduce the strain on the courts and to produce more collaborative outcomes.
The review follows a year of consultation, which identified that the current system is "too complicated" and is leading to "harmful delays".
Mr Norgrove said: "Family justice is under huge strain. Cases take far too long and delays are likely to rise. Children can wait well over a year for their futures to be settled. This is shocking."
