Mergers guidelines published by OFT and CC

Businesses employing a mergers and acquisitions solicitor service have been issued with a new quick guide to what they can expect from competition authorities.
The document, which is published by the Office of Fair Trading (OFT) and Competition Commission (CC), builds on the Merger Assessment Guidelines released in September of last year.
It sets out whether firms need to notify the authorities, the roles of the OFT and the CC and which mergers are reviewed at when they could referred for a full CC investigation.
Alison Oldale, Cchief economist at the CC said: "We are aware that not all companies will be familiar with how mergers are assessed in the UK and we hope that they will find this short guide on what to expect from the process instructive and useful."
Commenting, Sheldon Mills from the OFT, remarked that while some mergers are good for the economy, others can lead to higher prices, reduced choice and less innovation.
It comes after the CBI called on the government to deregulate mergers where the turnover is less than £5 million.
