Construction firm prosecuted for asbestos failures

A construction company could be facing an asbestos compensation claim after workers in Derby were exposed to the potentially deadly material.
Quarnmill Construction Ltd was preparing a building for demolition in 2009 and had employed a contractor to remove materials that contained asbestos.
A Health and Safety Executive (HSE) investigation revealed that the firm failed to check the suitability of the contractor for carrying out such work or if he had a licence to remove asbestos.
After the work had commenced, the company informed the HSE that it believed the site had become contaminated with the material.
Quarnmill pleaded guilty to breaching health and safety laws and was fined £13,000 at Derby Magistrates' Court.
HSE inspector Carol Southerd said: "Asbestos is the single greatest cause of work-related deaths in the UK. Employers need to protect their workers now to prevent them contracting an asbestos-related disease in the future."
It comes as the government announces plans to reduce the number of workplace safety visits by a third.
