Nuneaton-based Intelligent Recycling prosecuted over workplace injury

A Nuneaton recycling firm could be facing a workplace accident compensation claim after a teenager was pinned to the ground by a forklift truck.

The 18-year-old employee was using the vehicle to carry out unloading work for Intelligent Recycling when it overturned and landed on top of him.

He suffered a broken leg, dislocated ankle and his left elbow was broken, crushed and dislocated.

Nuneaton Magistrates' Court heard how the employee had only been working for the firm for three weeks and had received no formal training on operating a forklift truck when the incident occurred.

A Health and Safety Executive (HSE) investigation revealed other employees had not been trained in such work.

Intelligent Recycling was fined £4,000 and ordered to pay over £2,000 in costs.

HSE inspector Michelle Morrison said: "Forklift trucks are involved in nearly a quarter of all workplace transport accidents, often because of poor supervision and inadequate training.

"All companies that use lift trucks must train operators to a minimum standard set by HSE."

It comes as the government announces plans for major shake-up of workplace health and safety laws that will see fewer inspections.
