Firm fined after worker falls through skylight

A Milton Keynes plastics manufacturer could be facing a workplace accident compensation claim after a worker fell though a damaged skylight.
Alpla Ltd has been fined following the incident in 2009, when 44-year-old Barry Brice fell seven and half metres onto the tool room floor below, suffering a fractured wrist and finger, broken ribs, cuts and bruising.
He was measuring the skylight at the firm's premises in Kingston, Buckinghamshire after it had been damaged in a previous incident when it shattered.
Commenting on the case, Karl Howes from the Health and Safety Executive noted that falls from such a height are often fatal.
"This incident was entirely preventable and demonstrates what little control there was at the Alpla site. Mr Brice should never have been allowed alone to venture onto the roof," he added.
According to data from the HSE, last year more than 4,000 workers suffered major injuries as the result of falls from height and 15 lost their lives.
It comes as the HSE conducts a UK-wide crackdown on the construction industry that is focussing on unsafe working at height.
