House lending stays flat in February

Little change is being reported in the residential property conveyancing sector, as new figures show mortgage lending stayed flat in February.
The Council of Mortgage Lenders (CML) reports that loans advanced for house purchases totalled an estimated £9.5 billion last month, largely unchanged from January.
Lending in February was only marginally higher than in the same month last year, though remortgaging activity has increased.
The CML said that while there has been the normal seasonal pick-up in residential property conveyancing after Christmas, it has been lower than in 2010.
Commenting on figures, CML chief economist Bob Pannell said the housing market "remains stuck in a rut".
He added that there is nothing in the data "that alters our underlying view that this is going to be a challenging year for households and the housing market".
It comes as the CML calls on the government to use the Budget to look at reforming stamp duty, arguing that the state of the housing market presents a "strong case" for change.
