One in five north-west construction sites fail safety inspections

Close to a fifth of construction sites in the north-west of England are at risk of a personal injury claim from workers.
A series of inspections across Cheshire, Greater Manchester and Merseyside revealed that many businesses are not taking adequate measures to stop a workplace accident compensation claim.
The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) visited 219 sites across the region, issuing formal enforcement notices at 41 of these because they were operating below acceptable standards.
It came as part of a nationwide initiative that revealed similar levels of health and safety lapses across the construction industry in other regions.
HSE principal inspector of construction Wayne Crumpton said the findings of the visits are "unacceptable".
"Companies have a responsibility to protect their workers, to help rid construction of its reputation as being one of Britain's most dangerous industries," he added.
The HSE notes that more than 1,000 construction workers were injured across the north-west of England last year, while eight lost their lives.
