Enforcement 'vital' to cut workplace accidents

Enforcement is a key factor in cutting the workplace accident compensation claim rate among British businesses, it has been suggested.
The British Safety Council believes it is the threat of legal action that makes employers take suitable measures to reduce injuries at work.
Neal Stone, director of policy and research at the organisation, said: "The evidence shows that the most important influential factor for employers to comply with health and safety law is the consequences of not complying with the law."
His comments come as concerns are raised about whether the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) will be properly able to carry out inspections.
The British Safety Council suggested that the frequency of HSE visits to employers would be cut as the agency faces budget cuts of 35 per cent over the next four years.
Mr Stone said there is a worry that the funding reduction "sends out a message to industry that health and safety is not as important as it was".
It is vital the government makes it clear that workplace safety remains a "top priority", he added.
