Third of construction sites unsafe in High Peak

Construction sites in High Peak are at risk of a workplace accident compensation claim being made, after it was found that a third are dangerously unsafe.
A Health and Safety Executive (HSE) investigation revealed 17 out of 56 sites visited were so far below the required standards that workers' lives were being put at risk.
Formal enforcement notices were issued at these sites before an injury leading to a personal injury claim could occur.
The majority of the problems were related to unsafe working at height, which has formed a core part of the HSE's nationwide clampdown on the construction industry.
Other regional inspections revealed a quarter of building sites in East Lancashire and Newcastle breach health and safety regulations.
Commenting on the High Peak visits, HSE principal inspector for construction Nic Rigby said: "It's particularly concerning that so many of the enforcement notices we issued related to unsafe work being carried out at height.
"This is the number one cause of deaths in the construction industry."
