Fine issued for asbestos failures

The director of an asbestos surveying company has been fined £5,000 after failing to manage the spread of the material at a demolition site in Leicester.
Shay James, a director of Redditch-based Amencon Ltd, was sentenced at Leicester Magistrates' Court after a Health and Safety Executive (HSE) identified several failings in a survey he carried out in a factory unit in the city that was to be turned in to housing.
The court heard how Mr James carried out a site investigation that failed to notice 1,252 sq m of asbestos insulation board and lagging.
HSE inspector Stephen Farthing said it was "completely unacceptable" that people were put at risk of asbestos exposure.
"The dangers of asbestos are well known and contractors should be aware that HSE will not hesitate to take enforcement action against any firm that ignores the law in this way," he added.
It comes after two families won a landmark asbestos compensation claim at the Supreme Court that could pave the way for more litigation against companies and local authorities that have not taken suitable precautions against the material.
