Legacies a blessing for charities

People should not be put off from seeking advice in relation to wills and inheritance advice because of fear about making complex financial arrangements.

National Savings & Investments recently issued a report which stated that 36 per cent of adults in the UK are unaware of whether their parents have even made a will or how they plan to distribute their estate. The research also suggests that 46 per cent of individuals do not know where any of their parents' important documents are kept.

However, open discussions within a family or with friends can prevent the difficulties that arise when the relevant paperwork needed in the event of an individual's incapacity or death cannot be found. The report further indicated that while only seven per cent of people have spoken with their parents about inheritance a quarter of people stated that they would rely on an inheritance in the future.

There are many reasons why individuals delay making wills. The report indicated a number of these with 12 per cent simply saying that it was not a priority for them. This may be because they do not have any obvious beneficiaries in mind and consideration to leaving charitable gifts may be appropriate in these circumstances.

A further 11 per cent of individuals did not wish to think about their parents passing away. Yet, 49 per cent of people whose parents have passed away said it was especially important to have these conversations early because it allowed time for financial matters to be discussed in a calm fashion, instead of being held in times of stress.

Jeremy Tucker of Lamport Bassitt states: "It is clear that it is important for families to openly discuss their wills and inheritance planning. Whilst it is a sensitive subject professional advisers can often help individuals to clarify their thoughts and present alternative solutions to their individual circumstances."
