Councils 'may face legal action over cuts'

Councils across the UK may need to seek advice from an employment law solicitor service as it is claimed that many could be facing legal action over job cuts.
A Freedom of Information request by Unison reveals that 72 per cent of local authorities did not complete equality impact assessments (EIAs) over their initial redundancy proposals.
Even more (78 per cent) were found not to have completed an EIA on their final job loss plans.
Councils must give "due regard" to equality when making decisions, Unison explains, adding that an EIA is a key way of achieving this.
Unison head of local government Heather Wakefield said the survey shows many councils are "flouting the rules".
She added: "Women, ethnic minorities and people with disabilities are well represented in the local government workforce, so there's a real chance that heavy job losses will fall disproportionately onto these groups.
"This could leave the door wide open to costly and time-consuming legal challenges."
It comes after Unite members at Southampton City Council voted to reject proposed pay cuts.
