Brits 'embarrassed to discuss wills and tax planning'

Many people in the UK are too embarrassed to talk about wills and tax planning, new research indicates.

Releasing the results of a survey that reveals many Brits are unwilling to discuss issues surrounding the death of parents, NS&I is advising people that it is never too early to start making a will.

It found that just over a third (36 per cent) of adults do not how if their parents have a will or how they plan to distribute their estates.

Reasons for not talking about wills and tax planning included it being a low priority, parents being unwilling to discuss the matter and many simply unnerved by talking about death.

NS&I spokesperson Tim Mack said family members should encourage others to sit down and talk about wills and tax planning.

He added: "This is a chance for parents to have honest conversations with their children about the importance of planning ahead, and provides an opportunity for parents to share advice from their own experiences on this matter."

Jeremy Tucker, head of wills, trusts and tax planning at Lamport Bassitt, noted: "Despite the results of this survey many people do feel happier knowing that they have taken steps to arrange for their affairs to be in order. When families do discuss matters openly issues which may be perceived as potential problems can often be resolved. This was demonstrated in the recent BBC television series with Gerry Robinson entitled Can't Take It With You.

"By taking professional advice individuals can be assured that their affairs will be dealt with in a sympathetic and understanding way and often solutions suggested which may not have occurred to them."

The news comes as the Office for Tax Simplification calls for a review of inheritance tax.
