RoSPA: Stay on top of hazards to avoid a workplace accident compensation claim

Employers wanting to avoid a workplace accident compensation claim have been advised to carefully assess all risks and hazards to prevent slips and falls.

Roger Bibbings, occupational safety adviser at the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA), claimed that it is important for firms looking at accident risks to consult with staff.

This, he explained, will mean all employees and managers are suitably trained to carry out their tasks.

Mr Bibbings added: "Some easy and inexpensive ways to reduce slips, trips and falls are: remove slip and trip hazards; monitor near misses involving slips and trips; avoid spillages and contamination; implement good cleaning regimes; and ensure good lighting is present in workplaces."

His comments come as it emerges that more firms could be facing a workplace accident compensation claim from employees as the number of incidents increases.

According to the National Patient Safety Agency (NPSA) the number of patient safety incidents in England that occurred between April 1st and September 30th 2010 and reported to the NPSA by November 30th 2010 was 547,879 – an increase of four per cent compared to the previous six-month period.
