Nottingham council fined for asbestos failings

Nottingham City Council could be facing asbestos compensation claims from up to 150 people after it was found guilty of breaching health and safety laws governing the potentially lethal material.

The local authority was fined £30,000 after pleading guilty to breaking asbestos rules following a Health and Safety Executive (HSE) prosecution.

An investigation took place after a visiting contractor noted debris on the floor of the council's Woolsthorpe depot that he suspected of containing asbestos.

It was found that an asbestos survey carried out when the council took over the building suggested that due to its design, there was no guarantee of removing all of the material.

Nottingham City Council painted over walls to contain the asbestos but failed to follow a plan drafted by a specialist company as to how to control and manage the material.

HSE principal inspector Frank Lomas said: "The latest health and safety statistics show that more people are dying as a result of asbestos related diseases than are killed in accidents at work.

"This situation will not change unless organisations take their duty to manage asbestos seriously."

It comes after Yorkshire-based Libra Demolition Ltd was fined for asbestos failings after an HSE investigation.
