Majority of bosses 'unaware unpaid internships are illegal'

The majority of managers are unaware that unpaid interns may be entitled to seek an employment law solicitor service to pursue grievances.
According to new research from Internocracy carried out by YouGov, just 12 per cent of top, senior and middle managers realise that unpaid placements may be illegal.
Only ten per cent of people aged 18 to 35 who had heard of internships understood that companies offering such positions without remuneration could be breaking the law.
A majority (59 per cent) of people believe that companies exploit interns as a source of free labour, while nine per cent think these positions should be unpaid.
Internocracy chief executive officer Becky Heath said interns deserve at least the minimum wage if they are given responsibilities and expected to work set hours.
She added: "Intern isn't code for free labour and it's time companies stopped profiting from exploiting young people."
It comes as the Trades Union Congress reports that a record number of people are working unpaid overtime.
