TUC: More working overtime than ever before

Millions of people may need to consult an employment contract law service, as it emerges that record numbers are working unpaid overtime.
The Trades Union Congress (TUC) believes that 5.26 million employees are doing additional work for no extra cash – the highest number since records began in 1992.
Analysis of official figures by the TUC reveals that over one in five (21 per cent) workers regularly did unpaid overtime last year.
At an average of seven hours and 12 minutes a week, the amount of unpaid work is worth £5,485 a year per employee, the union states.
TUC general-secretary Brendan Barber explained that existing staff are having to take up the slack as employers remain unwilling to recruit.
He added that "forcing staff to endlessly put in too many hours could lead to increased stress levels, which can make staff ill and reduce the quality of the work they do".
It comes as the TUC calls for more action to tackle workplace stress, as its own research reveals that this is now the most common health and safety problem at work.
