Wills and inheritance tax planning advice offered to business owners

Small business owners have been offered some tips on wills and inheritance tax planning by a legal expert.
Sue Medder, presenter of the BBC2 Can't Take It With You programme, explained that it very important for owners of a family business to consider how they intend to pass it on to their children.
Writing in Real Business, she pointed out that good communication with children and wider family members is vital, as this will ensure the transition is smooth.
Ms Medder also suggested that it is worth considering whether the shares of the business should be put in trust or owned outright by children.
She points out that business owners should make the most of wills and inheritance tax planning, as "there are generous inheritance tax reliefs available for business property but it is important to make sure that all conditions are met".
Recently, a report from the Institute for Public Policy Research called for an end to inheritance tax and for it to be replaced with a Capital Receipts Tax.
