'Don't leave hearing loss untreated'

People seeking industrial deafness compensation have been advised that leaving their hearing loss untreated can significantly affect their quality of life.
According to Rachel McDonald from Deafness Research UK, not dealing with hearing loss quickly can impact on relationships, especially with partners and close family members.
"Getting help, typically with a hearing aid, can result in significant improvements in quality of life, greatly improving your ability to communicate with family and loved ones," she explained.
The comments follow research which found that having a noisy job is associated with hearing impairment in middle-aged adults.
Ms McDonald went on to say that if someone works in a noisy industry and does not use hearing protection, there is "a lot of evidence" to indicate that hearing could be damaged.
"Most hearing loss occurs very gradually and you may not be aware that your hearing is deteriorating," she added.
The first thing to do if someone suspects they may be losing their hearing is to consult the family doctor, who will be able to point them in the direction of a specialist if needed, Ms McDonald advised.
