Firm fined after asbestos failures

A Yorkshire-based demolition firm could be facing an asbestos compensation claim after being found guilty of failing to manage the harmful material on site.
Libra Demolition Ltd was fined after it failed to properly manage and monitor asbestos removal on a project to demolish buildings at the former Vesuvius works in Worksop, Nottinghamshire.
A joint investigation carried out by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) and the Environment Agency found no records of the safe removal or disposal of the asbestos that was known to be contained in the buildings.
The firm was fined £1,500 and ordered to pay £10,000 in costs after pleading guilty to the charges at Worksop Magistrates' Court.
HSE inspector Kevin Wilson said: "The firm neglected to manage and monitor the project so as to ensure the notifiable asbestos was removed safely under licensed conditions by a licensed contractor, and therefore failed in its legal obligations."
The news comes as the HSE warns of the potential for a workplace accident compensation claim at construction sites in Merseyside, after a quarter failed inspections in the first two days on a month-long clampdown.
