Darren Bent accident car hire court case warning for motorists

A recent court case involving Aston Villa's Darren Bent will provide food for thought for private clients taking advantage of replacement vehicles, following an accident.

His insurer, Allianz Insurance, successfully contested a claim made by the footballer, who hired an Aston Martin to drive while his vehicle was being repaired.

Cambridge County Court ruled in favour of the insurer, which had claimed that Bent had not carried out an appropriate market comparison before accepting the Aston, the hire of which was valued at £573.28 per day + VAT.

This could set a new precedent for private clients who find themselves in similar circumstances.

Allianz Insurance motor and casualty claims manager Martin Saunders explained: "It is important for motorists to understand that the general public may still have to pay towards the costs of a so-called 'free' credit hire vehicle, if they do not follow basic principles. If claimants can afford it, shop around."

Drivers can also reduce their chances of being involved with an insurance company by driving more safely and avoiding accidents.

Institute of Advanced Motorists director of policy Neil Greig recently underlined the importance of training for improving the skills of motorists on the road, as it helps to boost decision making.
