Housing supply shortage 'a huge issue'

Residential property conveyancing continues to be affected by the "huge issue" that is the shortage of adequate housing.
The Home Builders Federation (HBF) argues that the supply of properties has dried up as the level of mortgage availability drops.
Not until mortgage lending returns to "sensible levels" will residential property conveyancing be resurgent, HBF head of communications Steve Turner suggested.
It comes as housing minister Grant Shapps hosts a summit on first-time buyers that will look at the problems faced by people attempting to get on the property ladder.
"We very much hope that this will deliver some sensible policies that will deliver increased lending which will allow first-time buyers to enter the market and, in turn, will allow developers to provide the homes that we know we need," Mr Turner added.
Speaking ahead of the summit, the Council of Mortgage Lenders argued that other groups of home buyers are also struggling to find credit.
The CML noted that the average age of a first-time buyer who does not receive help from parents now stands at 31.
