Bar warns of DIY litigants 'surge'

There could be a surge in the number of people representing themselves in litigation and dispute resolution cases, the Bar Council has warned.
It is concerned that the "crude and brutal" cuts to legal aid will mean the courts are filled with DIY litigants, risking "gridlock".
Chairman of the Family Law Bar Association Stephen Cobb QC explained that this will slow the justice system.
"The government cannot say with any confidence that the proposed cuts will not end up costing as much as it is trying to save," he said.
Mr Cobb went on to highlight the problems that the plans could mean for family law, mediation and relationships.
In family cases , some men or women suffering from serious psychological abuse may go unrepresented in private law proceedings, while parents could face the removal of their children into care if they do not have representation, he claimed.
The Bar Council is particularly concerned that the overall effect of legal aid cuts will less access to justice.
It comes as the Bar Council raises concerns about plans to reform civil litigation costs outlined in Lord Justice Jackson's report.
