BPF welcomes govt pledge on non-paying tenants

A government minister has suggested that there may less need for landlords to employ a commercial debt recovery solicitor, after indicating they will receive "extra protection" against non-paying tenants. Speaking at the British Property Federation's (BPF) Residential Conference, welfare minister Lord Freud said: "What I don't like seeing is people messing you around and you losing 12 weeks' rent every time someone does a bunk." He indicated that there may be a return to direct payment, where landlords are paid by councils and not by housing benefit tenants. The comments were described as "heartening" by the BPF, especially the limited offer of a return to the direct payment system. BPF director of policy for real estate Ian Fletcher added, however, that "many landlords remain to be convinced that they should stay in the housing benefit market when they could easily take paying tenants, particularly in areas of high demand". The news comes after the LSL Buy to Let Index revealed that £276 million in rent went unpaid in December. Posted by Gaby Hamerton
