NHS trust fined for asbestos exposure

An NHS trust could be facing an asbestos compensation claim after it was prosecuted for putting patients at risk of exposure to the dangerous substance. Northamptonshire NHS Teaching Primary Care Trust was fined for putting members of the public at risk to asbestos at Isebrook Hospital in Wellingborough in 2008. The trust, along with NUTEC Security Systems and company director Paul Beeby, pleaded guilty to breaching health and safety rules on asbestos. A Health and Safety Executive (HSE) investigation found that the trust did not supply the firm with enough information on asbestos levels in the building. In addition, it was noted that Mr Beeby did not ensure his surveys were sufficient to identify asbestos.
HSE inspector Karl Raw said: "The lack of planning meant that there was potential for workers and members of the public to be exposed to asbestos.
"There's no way of knowing the extent of the exposure as work in some areas had been completed and cleaned before the potential exposures were uncovered."
Recently, Halifax-based MA Estates was fined after exposing workers to asbestos.
