Residential property conveyancing 'to pick up in 2011'

Residential property conveyancing will see a resurgence in 2011 with the early signs looking promising, according to the National Association of Estate Agents (NAEA). This comes as the organisation reports that the bad weather and holiday season led to the lowest number of house sales in nearly eight years. Estate agents sold an average of four properties in December 2010, the worst figure since January 2003 and a marked decline from the seven per branch reported in November. Although sales normally fall away in December, the NAEA says the terrible weather further weakened the market. The organisation's president Mike Jones said people should not read too much into the figures. "This lack of sales can be explained by freak weather conditions, rather than any underlying problem with the market. We would hope to see a bounce-back in the next few months," he remarked. January has started "very strongly", Mr Jones added, with agents reporting "a very busy couple of weeks". The news comes as the Council of Mortgage Lenders says house purchase lending remained stable in November, the latest month for which it has figures. Posted by Gaby Hamerton
