Firm prosecuted on asbestos charges

An asbestos compensation claim could be on the cards for workers at a firm that has been prosecuted for breaching health and safety rules governing the material.
Workers replacing a roof of a factory owned by MA Estates Limited were exposed to asbestos fibres in 2007.
The property management company, based in Halifax, was fined £30,100 after it admitted to a series of offences that led to the asbestos exposure.
An investigation carried out by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) found that the firm had failed to assess risks, had no licence for removing asbestos and did not give workers training on how to remove the material.
HSE inspector Rachel Brittain said: "The dangers of asbestos should never be underestimated and are well known in the property industry and beyond. For a company to put workers at this level of risk shows a total disregard for their safety and welfare."
The news comes after pub operator Mitchells & Butlers was fined a total of £14,001 after three electricians and two plumbers were exposed to asbestos.
