HSE warns offshore industry of major accidents

In a warning that could reduce the workplace accident compensation claim rate, the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) is warning the offshore industry not to ignore the detail when trying to prevent major incidents.
The HSE advised the industry not to put workers' safety in danger by sidelining day-to-day maintenance.
In the course of inspections over the last three years the HSE found a wide variation in attitudes towards health and safety.
The physical condition of installations such as walkways, pipe supports, cable trays and valves also varied greatly between operators.
Steve Walker, head of HSE's Offshore Division, said day-to-day safety concerns should become the "poor relation" in the risk assessment family.
"While we recognise the commitment of companies in preventing any failures that could lead to major incidents offshore, it is essential that they are not neglecting the general fabric of their installations," he added.
The news comes as the HSE unveils a new web tool to help low risk workplaces such as shops carry out risk assessments.
