Scissor lift safety warning issued after fatal accidents

Companies using certain types of scissor lifts are being warned of the risks of a head and spinal injury claim after five people have been killed in three separate accidents. The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) is warning maintenance engineers and those in the construction industry using or leasing out JLG 500RTS and 400 RTS scissor lifts to make sure critical components are working properly. In all the fatal accidents in the last four years, these lifts have overturned as a result of the oscillating axle failing to lock properly and a failure in the lift/drive interlock system. HSE inspector Richard Clarke said: "Though this safety alert is primarily to warn those who own and use these specific models of scissor lift, and those with similar interlock systems, it should serve as a reminder to all users of mobile elevating work platforms that there is a need to regularly maintain, inspect and test the equipment."
The warning follows one made to operators of hand-fed platen machines after a number of fatal accidents in recent years.
