Independent social worker court fees 'flawed and irrational'

Plans to cap the expert witness fees for independent social workers (ISWs) could seriously affect the welfare of children caught up cases involving family law, mediation and relationships, it has been claimed.
Organisations representing ISWs are protesting against plans that will see social workers paid no more than £33 an hour for court work.
In a move described as "flawed and irrational", other professions will be able to earn up to £150 an hour.
Ann Haigh, chair of NAGALRO, the professional association for children's guardians, family court advisers and ISWs, said: "This undervalues social work expertise and demeans the whole social work profession.
"The government needs to act speedily to preserve the high quality social work advice that courts rely upon for making good and timely decisions for children."
In a letter to justice secretary Kenneth Clarke, NAGALRO, the British Association of Social Workers and two private independent social work companies - ISWA and WillisPalmer - are calling for the cap on fees to be scrapped.
WillisPalmer managing director Mark Willis described the cap as "outrageous".
