Older drivers 'safest in poor weather'

Older drivers are less likely to make road traffic accident claims in icy weather, it has been claimed. Insurance group Saga is reporting that claims made in December by drivers over the age of 50 are down 17 per cent on the same month last year. The firm says that AA statistics revealing a doubling in accident claims must be down to younger drivers. Saga director-general Ros Altmann commented: "It is really encouraging that older motorists are using their experience and planning around the bad weather to ensure they are not out on the roads in the ice and snow." Meanwhile, the Scottish government is issuing guidance for safer winter driving to reduce the incidences of uninsured loss recover and road traffic accident claims. Drivers are urged to check weather and road conditions ahead of making a journey, as poor weather can set in fast. "Journey planning advice also applies to people heading for buses, trains and airports," added transport minister Keith Brown. Posted by Gaby Hamerton
