HSE to open consultation on workplace accidents

Changes to rules that may affect a workplace accident compensation claim are to be open for consultation from January.
The three-month process will see the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) seek views on proposals contained in Lord Young's report on workplace safety to extend to seven days the period before an injury or accident needs to be reported.
At the moment, employers must report to the relevant enforcing authority, normally the HSE or local council, within three days of a worker suffering an incident or injury.
The proposals would align the rules with that for obtaining a so-called fit note from a GP for sickness absence and ensure that a person who has suffered a reportable injury has undergone a professional medical assessment, the HSE says.
HSE chair Judith Hackitt added: "Whilst there will be some obvious advantages in reducing the reporting requirements on business, there will be other factors which need to be taken into account."
The news comes as the HSE launches a new web tool for low risk businesses to carry out risk assessments.
