BPF calls for local planning agenda

The government must press ahead with plans to give communities direct incentives to back sustainable development, the British Property Federation (BPF) has said. Plans for the New Homes Bonus and the local retention of business rates, which may affect a commercial property solicitor dealing with contaminated land and planning, need to be pushed forward quickly, the BPF argued. Reforms of planning laws need to stimulate the growth needed to get the economy going and pull the UK out of debt, the organisation's chief executive Liz Peace said. "The government's desire to see a locally-drive planning system has the potential to deliver better development that has real buy-in from local communities," she explained. Ms Peace made her remarks as a University of Southampton study shows that supermarkets built on the edge of towns help to revitalise communities. Neil Wrigley, professor of Human Geography at the university, said: "Supermarkets built in the centre or edge of centres sites play a vital role in helping to maintain and enhance the role of district centres. The claw back trade in to the town." The BPF recently said the government should do more to boost the private rental sector. Posted by Gaby Hamerton
