Record number of wills contested

Wills and inheritance tax planning mediation services are working overtime, as the number of contested wills hits record highs.
The number of family inheritance disputes reaching the High Court has risen by 38 per cent in a year.
In 2008 there were 80 such disputes that went as far as the High Court, in 2009 that figure rose to 110.
Since 2006, the number of cases has increased ten-fold, with just ten cases reported that year.
This week, judges at the Court of Appeal in London upheld a 2009 High Court ruling over a contested will.
A widow had bequeathed her 287-acre farm to the RSPCA, before her daughter Christine Gill, a Leeds University lecturer, disputed the will and won her case.
Following the ruling, a statement from Dr Gill said: "It was a matter of huge regret and disappointment to me and my family that the RSPCA chose not to accept the original decision, forcing us to endure another court hearing. We can now settle back into our lives on the family farm that I love."
