Govt minister calls for more mediation services

Mediation services should be used to resolve arguments, whether for a commercial dispute resolution or for private clients, justice minister Jonathan Djanogly has said.

He outlined the government's stance on mediations, claiming that people should play a bigger role in resolving their problems.

Speaking at the Centre for Effective Dispute Resolution 20th anniversary awards dinner last week, he said: "We need to work together to build the case for mediation and other forms of dispute resolution, so that it is adopted by the many and not just the few."

He warned that litigation can be costly for both sides, advising that court should be the last resort, not the first.

The minister also wants people to have more access to information on mediation services.

"I believe the legal profession has an invaluable role to play, by supporting people in taking a less adversarial and a more collaborative approach to solving their problems," he added.

His comments follow those made recently by Lord Justice Mummery, who said that neighbourly disputes should be attempted to be resolved through mediation, rather than going to court.
