BA and Unite resolution looking further away

Mediation services look like a long way off providing a commercial dispute resolution to the on-going stand-off between British Airways (BA) and Unite, the UK's biggest union. Cabin crews have been at odds with BA for some time over pay and conditions, with a total of 22 days of walk-outs. Unite's main cabin crew branch Bassa has now suspended a planned ballot on BA's latest offer, and is instead pressing for a vote on more strike action. Tony Woodley, Unite's joint general secretary, said he could not recommend any offer that was not also backed by elected representatives. "Our cabin crew representatives have, on reflection, decided that they can no longer support a recommendation of this offer to the membership, even in the heavily qualified terms originally agreed, and have so advised cabin crew," he explained. "Accordingly, the union will no longer make such a recommendation." Unite members in the corrugated board industry have recently voted to reject a pay from employers body the Confederation of Paper Industries, with workers now to be balloted on strike action.
